She & Him

I REALLY dislike this duo of musicians, everyone seems to love them but they don’t do anything for me. Nothing about their music stands out as amazingly different or honest. They’ve got a few covers on their album Volume One; most notably You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles and I Should Have Known Better by The Beatles. I’m sorry but they should have picked other songs to cover cause as far as I’m concerned those are both hard songs to cover. It almost seems like maybe they have too much confidence in their partnership where they believe they can pull off such classics when they can’t, at all. There is no heart in those covers. Zooey Deschanel’s voice is pretty, I see nothing else behind it but just a girl who had a pretty voice and decided to do music on the side cause it was convenient. When I look at their band the message I get from them is, “Hey! We’re so indie, you should listen to us if you want to be hip in the indie scene.” I’m serious; this is the kind of vibe I get. It’s almost like they are self-aware of their pretentiousness which only makes them more pretentious. There are some original songs on the album by Zooey Deschanel and I will say I don’t like them at all, “Oh what can you do with a sentimental heart,” well apparently you can write cliche music and get a record deal. I think I’m taking cheap shots here but really this is nothing but fluff music.
