Great Lake Swimmers are another prime example of great Canadian talent. They've been around for a solid 7 years and have released 4 albums and an EP and LP. I had the immense pleasure of seeing them at Hillside Festival last week and seeing them play made the fact that I was walking around in the shittest weather bare foot worth it. In fact, once they started playing it was around 7:30 and the clouds finally cleared and we got to enjoy a lovely sunset. Tony Dekker has this inexplicably magical quality to his on stage demenour and his wistful voice, it's a beautiful site to behold. You can really tell that he was born to make this kind of music as he is so natural at it. Not to mention, I am very fond of his writing abilities. He writes beautiful metaphors and comparisons and I really like the themes many of his songs discuss. Here's a taste:
But don't be afraid to change your colours now.
I've known you all summer, and you rose above it all.
I see you hesitate to fall now,
But it's a pretty good view from down here, too.
And when the wind takes you, it takes me, too.
When you change colours, I change mine, too.
Try not to think, and I will try to.
When you let go, I will let go, too.
- Changing Colours from Ongiara
I am truly a huge fan of these guys, in Febuary of this year they recorded a few of their songs for a bit called "The Legion Sessions". Here is the legion session for probably their most popular song off their new album Lost Channels. I do believe the album also made the short list for the Polaris Music Prize, coming in at number 3.
