Radiologyart

My interest in CT scans started because of the fact that my bio psych class has placed much emphasis on the parts of the brain and what they do, not surprisingly then you would expect that I would be looking at a lot of CT scans and other images of the brain such as this one. If there is one thing I learned from taking this class is that I really enjoy studying the brain, I almost enjoy it as much as I enjoy learning about behavioural disorders.

So, I stumbled upon a couple interesting images while I was studying. The first being this CT scan of Terri Schiavo who has hydrocephalus. Basically hydrocephalus is characterized by an enlargement of the ventricles in the brain and subsequent brain damage. In the below scan you can clearly see the cerebral spinal fluid in the ventricles are massive in comparison to how they should normally look. Terri Schiavo’s case has caused quite some controversy within her family in trying to figure out how to take care of her.

The second image I found was this CT scan with the slices of the brain. I found this on this site where you can purchase pretty much any kind of photo at whatever size you want. Initially I read about how some people use CT scans of the brain as art, hanging them up around their houses. I’m a pretty big fan of this idea because I think the brain is fascinating and why wouldn’t I not want to have a photograph of it on my wall? I’m fonder of this image (which is an MRI) and I would definitely have that one up in my room.

From this initial idea of using CT as a means of art expression I googled to try and find if anyone produced this type of art at all and I found this guy named Satre Stuelke who calls his art radiologyart. What he does is he takes CT scans of pop objects, food and mechanical devices all in the hopes of getting people to understand how these things are made. The one below is an example of what he does. The caption for this one reads as follows: A Big Mac from McDonald's. "It was bought at the lunch rush hour and it is apparent from the placement of pickles, sauce and lettuce that the chef was under pressure." He has also done some of a iphone, barbie, and a swanson's hungry man TV dinner. His site also displays other CT scans. Super cool!
